Best Diamond Painting Kits for Beginners, by Size and Price

Best diamond painting kits for beginners in 2026

The best first diamond painting kit is one you will actually finish: a canvas small enough to fit your table and your evenings, round drills that do not need lining up, and a picture you want to look at for a few weeks. This guide compares the beginner-friendly kits we sell from our studio in Alexander, North Carolina, with their sizes, drill shapes, time estimates and current prices side by side.

Every adult canvas below is full drill with DMC-coded drills. The numbered picks follow how easy each kit is to start, not its price.

Quick answer: For most adult beginners, start with a small round-drill kit. Cottage Garden (40 x 40 cm, $32) is our default first pick, and Winter Reading Nook (40 x 30 cm, $29) is the smallest adult canvas we sell. For children, start with a framed 15 x 15 cm kids kit ($12.99), and save the 40 x 50 cm square-drill cottages ($40) for your second project.

How we chose these beginner kits

  • Canvas size: A 40 x 40 cm or smaller canvas still covers a lot of drills, but it fits on an ordinary table with room left for a tray.
  • Round drills first: Round drills do not have edges to line up with their neighbors, so you can focus on matching symbols. Square drills sit edge to edge and need to be set straight.
  • Color count and layout: Large single-color areas give you long, calm stretches. Many small color changes keep you alert but slow you down.

Beginner diamond painting kits by price

This table lists each beginner-friendly kit from lowest to highest current price, with the size, drill shape and time that matter more than price for a first project. Hours are the rough estimates on each product page.

Lakeside Cottage in Spring $40 40 x 50 cm Square 20 to 25 A second project with calm water areas
The Winter Big Top $55 55 x 55 cm Round 30 to 40 A patient beginner who wants a bigger canvas

A higher price here mostly reflects a bigger canvas and more hours of work. Our large statement kits, such as Prism Grove (90 x 50 cm, round, $80) and the Owl kit (60 x 80 cm, square, $85), are in the premium large-format collection; they are better as a third or fourth project than a first.

Orders are packed in our studio in 2 to 5 business days and sent by USPS, usually arriving about 5 to 8 days later. Shipping within the US is $5.95 on orders under $20, $8.95 from $20 to $99.99, and free on orders of $100 or more.

1. Cottage Garden: best first kit for most adults

Cottage Garden is a 40 x 40 cm round-drill kit at $32. The picture is a floral arrangement spilling out of a weathered watering can: roses, red gerberas and berries tied with a red bow, with garden gloves, tools and a monarch butterfly around it. It uses 23 DMC colors, and the product page notes that at this size the drill areas stay large enough to place comfortably.

That combination is why it is our default first pick. The canvas is small, the drills are round, and the color count is moderate, so you learn the basic rhythm without fighting the pattern.

Best for: an adult who wants a real first canvas and likes warm reds and florals. Skip it if: flowers are not your subject; the other 40 x 40 cm kits below use the same format.

2. Winter Reading Nook (Quiet Hours): the smallest adult canvas

At 40 x 30 cm and $29, Winter Reading Nook is the smallest and least expensive adult canvas we sell. The scene is amber lamplight over a stack of books and a folded blanket, with snow drifting past a frosted window, in 21 DMC colors and round drills. The product page estimates roughly 12 to 15 hours and notes that the lamplight detail sits in a tight space, so a good light over your shoulder helps. It is in both our budget beginner kits and winter collections.

Best for: a cautious first-timer or a small table. Skip it if: you want a larger picture to hang; the 40 x 40 cm kits are only a little bigger.

3. Ice Cream & Daisies: best for relaxed background stretches

Ice Cream & Daisies is a 40 x 40 cm round-drill kit at $32. A daisy-print mug holds scoops of vanilla and berry ice cream, with waffle cones, lemons, raspberries and blueberries around it, all against a flat sky-blue background.

That background is the beginner-friendly part. Its 23 DMC colors are concentrated in the mug, cones and fruit, which leaves long runs of a single blue that you can fill while listening to a podcast.

Best for: someone who wants an easygoing pace. Skip it if: long stretches of one color sound dull rather than calming.

4. Cupcake Bouquet: best for beginners who love color

Cupcake Bouquet is another 40 x 40 cm round-drill kit at $32. Frosted pink cupcakes, tulips, sunflowers and fruit crowd a heart-print purple mug on a bold pink background.

It uses 29 DMC colors, which the product page calls a wide range for a 40 cm canvas. That keeps each object its own color, but it also means more color changes per session than the other 40 x 40 cm picks.

Best for: a beginner drawn to bright, busy pictures. Skip it if: you want the simplest possible pattern; start with Cottage Garden or Ice Cream & Daisies.

5. Lovebirds: best for a shared project or gift

Lovebirds is a 40 x 40 cm round-drill kit: two parrots perched wing to wing among peonies, string lights and floating hearts, in 23 DMC colors that sit mostly in the reds and pinks. The DIY kit is $32; a completed, unframed version is listed at $95.

Its product page estimates roughly 15 to 20 hours and calls it reasonable as a first kit. It lists a stylus pen, grooved tray, wax refill and tweezers in the box. No frame is included, and the canvas ships rolled, so leave it under something heavy overnight before you start.

If two people are working on it, agree on separate areas before peeling back the protective film, so you are not reaching across each other.

Best for: couples, friends, or a gift for someone new to the craft. Skip it if: the recipient would rather have a finished picture than 15 to 20 hours of making.

6. Framed kids kits: best for children

Our kids kits are $12.99 each: a 15 x 15 cm canvas already set in a white display frame, with designs including a unicorn, narwhal, whale, tractor and rocket ships. The Unicorn kit lists an applicator pen, tray and wax in the box and estimates roughly three to five hours.

The product pages are clear that the gems are tiny and loose in the packet, which makes these a supervised table craft. The Narwhal page also says to keep the packet away from anyone who still puts things in their mouth. Pastel designs such as the Narwhal are forgiving, because a slightly crooked gem blends into the soft colors around it.

For an even shorter trial, the keychain kits ($9.99 per set) let a beginner finish a small charm in one sitting and find out whether the craft suits them.

Best for: children doing a first project with an adult at the table. Skip it if: the child wants a large poster-sized picture; these are deliberately small.

Step up: the 40 x 50 cm square-drill cottages

Once you have finished a round-drill kit, the square-drill cottages are a natural second project. Thatched Cottage by the Pond, Lakeside Cottage in Spring and Italian Lakeside Village are each 40 x 50 cm, square drill, and $40.

Square drills sit edge to edge, so a finished area reads as continuous mosaic with no canvas showing between them. The trade-off is alignment: the Thatched Cottage page notes that square drills have to be set straight or the grid goes visibly crooked. All three pages estimate roughly 20 to 25 hours and list a drill pen, sorting tray and wax caddy, with no frame.

Thatched Cottage keeps you busy with a textured roof, a crowded flower garden and a still pond. Lakeside Cottage is quieter: a stone cottage, cherry blossom, a willow and one white swan on calm water. For more on the difference, read square vs. round drill diamond painting.

If you want more canvas but would rather stay with round drills, Golden Acres (45 x 45 cm, an autumn barn in golds, rusts and creams) and The Winter Big Top (55 x 55 cm, a snowy gothic circus) are the next sizes up.

Measure your table before you order

Cut a piece of paper to the canvas size you are considering and leave it on your usual work surface for an evening. You will see where your elbows, lamp, tray and drill packets need to go, and whether the project has somewhere to rest between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Are round or square drills better for beginners?

Round drills are the easier start, because you do not need to line up straight edges with the drills around them. Square drills give a smoother, edge-to-edge finish but ask for more care, which is why we suggest them for a second project.

What does full drill mean?

Full drill means the whole picture area is covered with drills, not just selected details. It describes coverage, not drill shape: every kit in this guide is full drill, with either round or square drills.

How long does a first diamond painting take?

It depends on canvas size, color count and your pace. As a guide, the product pages estimate three to five hours for a 15 x 15 cm kids kit, 12 to 15 hours for the 40 x 30 cm Winter Reading Nook, 15 to 20 hours for the 40 x 40 cm kits, and 20 to 25 hours for the 40 x 50 cm square-drill cottages.

Do I need to buy extra tools?

Usually not to start. The round-drill adult kits above list a stylus pen, grooved tray, wax and tweezers, the square-drill cottages a drill pen, sorting tray and wax caddy, and the kids kits a pen, tray and wax. Check the details list on the product page of the kit you choose. If you later want a way to keep pens, wax and tips together, The Tool Keeper ($29.99) is a padded case for them; it comes empty. Other add-ons are in tools and accessories.

What is the cheapest way to try diamond painting?

A keychain kit set ($9.99) or a framed kids kit ($12.99) is the lowest-cost way to try the craft. For adults who want a picture to hang, Winter Reading Nook ($29) is the least expensive full canvas we sell.

Can I return a kit if I change my mind?

Unopened kits and unused accessories can be returned within 14 days of delivery, and we pay the return postage. Opened kits can be returned only if the pattern is unreadable or the drills arrived spilled or damaged. Our Shipping & Returns page has the full policy.
