Four in the afternoon in August, the good chair, something cold within reach and no particular plan for the next two hours. That hour is what got painted.

A daisy-print mug is stacked with scoops of vanilla and berry pink, with crisp waffle cones leaning in beside it and ripe lemons, glossy raspberries and blueberries scattered around the base. Behind all of it sits a flat sky blue that stays the same brightness corner to corner. The yellow of the lemons against that blue is doing most of the heavy lifting, and the berries are the smallest shapes on the canvas, a few drills each.

That big blue field is the case for this one. Twenty-three colors, DMC 160 through DMC 3844, are concentrated in the mug, the cones and the fruit, which leaves you long uninterrupted stretches of background to work through while your attention is on a podcast or the other side of the room.

Roughly 15 to 20 hours, and beginner friendly on round drills. Be warned that the same blue background some people find restful, other people find tedious, and you will know which one you are within the first hour. The fruit is where the color changes cluster, so leave yourself some of it for the end. What ships is a kit, not a finished canvas, and there is no frame. It comes rolled and needs flattening under a weight before you start.

Hang it somewhere you sit down, and it will keep quietly insisting that it is August.
