Italian Lakeside Village

Morning, early, before the quay fills up. The light is still coming in sideways off the water and the villas have not yet flattened out into midday color.

They stand stacked along the lake edge in coral, ochre and rose, terracotta roofs above them, shutters half closed, flowers spilling out of window boxes and over balcony rails. Cypress trees run up the hillside behind in dark verticals that hold the whole composition together. Two rowboats sit near a cobblestone quay. The mountains beyond are pale and hazy, and the lake is calm enough to double the village along its lower edge.

The warm end of this palette is doing something specific. Coral, ochre and rose are close enough to one another that a village built from them could easily turn to mud, and the reason it does not is the cypress green and the lake blue cutting between the buildings. You will end up placing those greens early just to watch the walls separate.

Straight talk

Roughly 20 to 25 hours. The buildings are where it slows down, because shutters, windows and railings mean short runs of a color and a lot of hopping around the legend, so keep the numbered chart within reach and work one villa at a time. Square drills need to go down square, and that shows more on a scene with this many straight lines than it would on open landscape. Uncover only the section you are on, and weight each finished area under a clean book before you move.

The light in it stays where it is, which is more than the real morning ever managed.
