Winter Village Houses

By the first week of December the sun is gone before dinner is on the table. What that stretch of evening needs is not more overhead light. It is small warm windows at eye level, lit while the rest of the room stays dim.

These are hollow matte white buildings with crisp cut-out windows, steep gabled roofs, arched doorways and tiny mullioned panes. Slip a strand of fairy lights behind them or set an LED tealight underneath, and light pours out of every opening at once, printing soft amber squares across the shelf. The PLA finish is chalky rather than shiny, so under warm light the walls read like fresh snow or unglazed porcelain. Each building is hollow with an open base, so it drops straight over a light source with no assembly.

All three stand at the same height on different footprints. Line them up and you get one even roofline down the mantel instead of a stair-step, while each still reads as its own neighbor rather than one house scaled three ways.

• Large House: 3.9 in tall x 3.2 in wide x 2.8 in deep (99 x 82 x 70 mm), with a chimney, a dormered roof, a paneled front door and a wide multi-pane picture window that throws the most light of the three
• Small House: 3.9 in tall x 2 in wide x 2 in deep (98 x 52 x 52 mm), with a round rose window in the peak, arched double doors and two stacked rows of small panes, the slimmest footprint of the three
• Chapel: 3.9 in tall x 4.6 in wide x 2 in deep (98 x 117 x 52 mm), with arched windows down its side and a slender steeple, the widest and shallowest
• Set of 3: all three buildings, spanning about 10 in of shelf, nothing sitting deeper than 2.8 in
• Matte white PLA, hollow, open base, no assembly

Straight talk

Lights are not included. These are made to sit over a fairy light strand or a battery-operated LED tealight you already own, so one strand can light the whole row. Battery-operated LED only: never a real candle, wax tealight or open flame, because direct heat will warp, melt or ignite the plastic. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, no dishwasher, and keep them out of direct sun, hot cars and anywhere near a radiator or heat vent. Printed in small batches, so layer texture varies slightly.

Then the street is lit, the room stays dark, and nobody reaches for the ceiling light.
