Restraint was never on the table.

Frosted pink cupcakes sit at the center with sprinkles caught across the icing, and the fruit and flowers spill out around them against a flat, bold pink ground. Every object has a hard bright color of its own, so the eye keeps moving instead of settling anywhere. The sunflowers are the only warm yellow in the picture and they hold the top corner on their own. The watermelon is the reddest thing on the canvas and it wins every time you look at it.

Twenty-nine colors, DMC 317 to DMC 3855, is a wide range for a 40cm canvas. That is what lets the kiwi be its own green, the grapes their own purple and the frosting its own pink, rather than everything borrowing from one shared set of mid-tones and going muddy where the objects touch.

The details

40 x 40 cm (15.7 x 15.7 in)

Full coverage, round drills

29 DMC colors, DMC 317 to DMC 3855

Adhesive canvas with printed symbols and color legend

Sealed, numbered, DMC color-coded drill packets

Stylus pen, grooved tray, wax refill and tweezers included

Straight talk

Roughly 15 to 20 hours, which makes it a sane first kit. The trade-off for 29 colors on a small canvas is a lot of switching between small blocks, so lay the packets out in number order before you start rather than digging through the bag each time you change shade.
